Lets Veterans Choose Their Own Providers
S219-119 · Introduced Jan 23, 2025
Why it matters
Veterans could get care from more doctors and hospitals, including outside the VA, without meeting location rules. The change would last longer than the pilot if it becomes permanent.
What it does
- Runs a three-year pilot letting enrolled veterans pick any provider in the covered care system
- Covered care includes VA facilities and outside providers in the VA community care program
- Removes some rules on where veterans must live to get care at VA or outside facilities
- After four years, ends the community care access rules and sets one set of conditions
- After four years, veterans can use any VA medical facility, even outside their network region
